Kenya first sent a team to the quadrennial events 25 years ago, securing a total of 44 medals: 18th Deaflympics, 1997 Copenhagen, Denmark, 19th Deaflympics, 2001 Rome, Italy, 1 Silver medal; 20th Deaflympics, 2005 Melbourne, Australia, 3 Bronze medals; 21st Deaflympics, 2009 Taipei, Taiwan, 4 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze; 22nd Deaflympics, 2013 Sofia, Bulgaria, 6 Gold, 5 Silver and 6 Bronze; and 23rd Summer Deaflympic Games, 2017 Sumsun, Turkey where she won 5 Gold, 5 Silver and 6 Gold medals.
In the forthcoming 24th Deaflympics in Brazil, we will be competing in five disciplines including, athletics, basketball, football, handball and golf.
We will be making our debut in Football and Handball, following our successes in the other disciplines in Sofia, Bulgaria in 2013, and in Samsun, Turkey, in 2017.
I acknowledge the support that we continue to receive from His Excellency President
Uhuru Kenyatta, as we improve on our sports infrastructure, and promote the welfare of our sporting fraternity.
The government remains committed to providing an enabling environment for our athletes and to maintaining our status as a sporting destination.
I also recognize the valuable support from the varied stakeholders who have contributed to the training, kitting and sponsorship of our Deaf Sportsmen and Sportswomen. Team Kenya, has made the most of the available opportunities and is prepared to showcase its prowess in Brazil.
I, therefore, wish all our athletes the best, as they participate in the 24th Summer Deaflympics Championships in Brazil.
